History will be made today, when the first-ever Reynolds Raiders Girls Wrestling team takes to the mats at the Butler Tournament!
(Left-to-right) Makenzie Glaister, Emily Michaels & Sophia Wise
Although the team has just a few girls right now, they have the talent to do great things this year and ongoing. The team is comprised of junior Makenzie Glaister and two freshmen with successful Jr High experience, Sophia Wise and Emily Michaels.
Both Sophia and Emily had success at last year’s Junior High States. And Sophia, a state champ in a younger age group two years ago, made it to the medal podium last year. Many of you watched Emily grow as a wrestler during the past two years against the boys in Jr High matches.
Former Junior High coach, Leroy Johnson, was named the first girls coach for RHS and his Jr High assistant, Jon Hollobaugh, joined Leroy in the same capacity with the lady Raiders. The Jr High program was very successful during their tenure and they have coached these girls during that time. We can expect more of the same with this new program.
Head Coach Leroy Johnson and Assistant Jon Hollobaugh
This is the first year for girls wrestling as a sanctioned PIAA sport and we are so proud these girls are representing the Raiders in this inaugural season. It takes some moxy and self-confidence to step up and take the challenge to be the first ones in the sport.
We realize that the team is small now, but with more exposure and as some of the talented girls in the Jr High and Elementary programs coming up through the program, we are certain that we will have a full team in years to come.
Below is the schedule for the team. You will notice that it is dominated with tournament action mainly due to the small team which makes it difficult to compete in dual matches.
